A broad online search for a spring weekend getaway offering easily accessible peace and quiet opened up a world of unexpected accommodations recently. After fathoming the flurry of options—through Hotel Tonight, bedandbreakfast.com, and the MTA’s getaway packages—I chose to embark on a new kind of local adventure.
Skip the predictable, impersonal hotel experience on your next city break and opt instead for an affordable and memorable stay in a house in the wilds of Woodstock, a luxurious yurt in the Hudson Valley, a chic barn on the coast of Rhode Island, an environmentalist’s geodesic dome on an organic Connecticut farm, or a hotelier’s own cottage with a private beach in East Hampton.
For those interested in raising the travel bar, consider one of these six romantic hideaways near NYC.
1920’s House Close to Yale, from $130. Book it for the inspiring bookish environment. Book it for Sandy’s welcome basket of wine, scones and slippers. Book it for the wonderful quirky things like the Little Free Library, the taxidermied duck, veggie garden and barn attic-cum-master bedroom. Take Metro North to New Haven Station, a 20 minute walk (or quick cab ride) to the house.
Coastal Farm Suite in Narragansett, from $140. Book it for that fantasy of living on a farm (circa 1941)—you’ll share sleeping quarters with four horses on the other end of a red barn—for the Saturday farmers market, close proximity to Newport, and rejuvenating sense of calm. Host Mo can pick you up at the Amtrak station in Kingston.
Cottage by the Sea in East Hampton, from $250/night. Book it for the secluded beach, for the 1950s charm, for the bottle of wine, and for host Kyle’s advice, “Write the great American novel. Paint the beautiful landscapes. Rent a piano and groove!” Take the Hampton Jitney and plan a summer visit to Montauk Beach House, where Kyle is the manager.
Geodesic Dome in Bethlehem, CT, from $49/night. Book it for the bonfires and Robert’s blueberry pancakes, for the thrill of living off the grid for a night, for the private tour (and tasting) of an organic farm, and for having to hold someone tight under the covers to keep warm. For this low rate, you can splurge for a hybrid Zipcar. If it’s booked, check out this awesome Geo Dome on a Farm in the Catskills.
Luxurious Yurt on an Apple Orchard, from $99. Book it for the idyllic setting, for the goats and piglets, for the views of the Shawangunk Ridge, for the bonfires after hiking, and for Renee and Billiam’s hospitality, culinary skills, and kindness—they often pick guests up at the nearby Metro North Poughkeepsie station.
Cottage in Woodstock, from $120/night. Book it for the fire pit and grill, cool minimalist design, and the location—you’re in the wilderness yet within walking distance to town. Take Adirondack Trailways, which drops you off at the village green.
