Hiking is an amazing way to enjoy being out in nature while you’re getting exercise. Ensuring that you have what you need for the adventure is imperative. The planning will start long before you ever hit the trail. You must take the time you plan to hike and the distance you’re going into account when you

Plan Your Hike

You should plan your hike so that you know what challenges and terrain you’re going to face. You can ensure that you’re ready with the right gear and supplies for the trail you’re taking. This is also the time you can determine when you need to start your hike. For starters, you’ll need to pick your hiking spot. Here are some good ideas for hiking locations in the country.

Pack the Right Snacks

You need to have the right food to fuel your body while you hike. Because of the varying weather, you might experience and the fact that you have to carry what you bring, you should likely avoid foods that need to be chilled or heated.

Ideally, you’ll bring a variety of foods with you. Beef jerky is a good source of protein. Nuts, crackers, cheese, and dried fruits can also provide nutrition for you when you’re on the trails. All of these options can be eaten with bare hands so you don’t have to worry about utensils. Even soup is a good idea if you have a compact thermos to bring with you.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated as you hike is critical. Most hikers choose to have a water bladder in their gear to accomplish this. Be sure that you space out your water intake throughout the hike. Bring enough so you won’t run out. You may be able to find refill stations along some trails, so you can find out if this is present on the trail where you will hike.

Some hikers opt to bring electrolyte packs or tablets with them. Consider how these will impact you if you’re going to bring them. Sometimes, they contain artificial sweeteners, which can lead to gastrointestinal upset while you hike. Be sure to check the ingredients so that you can enjoy your hike without a stomachache or cramping.

Dress for the Weather

Check the weather for the hike destination before you leave. If the weather changes throughout the day, be sure you layer your clothes so that you can remain comfortable throughout your hike. You must consider exposure to the sun while you’re on the trail because you don’t want to have to deal with sunburn while you’re out.

Check Your Gear

You don’t have to take a bunch of gear with you when you go for a hike, but you do need to bring a few things, depending on the distance and duration of the hike. Having a GPS with you is a good idea in case you get lost. Most smartphones have this on them, so you can just bring your charged phone with a solar-powered charger if needed. You can also use your phone to take pictures of the things you see while you’re on the hike.
