Don’t You Just Love Winter: The Indoor Brooklyn Flea Market

What: Winter Pop-Up Market Dumbo

Where: 1 Hanson Place (at Ashland Pl.), Fort Greene

When: Open Saturdays and Sundays, through March 31, 10am to 5pm

Why: Brooklyn loves to host a flea party—and apparently lots of people love to attend. A month after the Winter Antiques Pop-Up market opened, Brooklyn Flea founders Eric Demby and Brownstoner blogger Jonathan Butler were faced with an overflow of vendors and vendees. Thanks to a last minute vacancy, now you can spend an entire afternoon skipping back and forth between the old flea and the upgraded food-infused flea on Front Street.

The 6,100 square-foot loft-like space is bigger than the Antiques market. It will have a combination of vintage and non-vintage vendors along with guest DJ’s and plenty of food. Although Dumbo has a host of great restaurants, the Flea organizers know that patrons love to shop and eat. “We were given the option to have food, which is a big draw,” said Demby. “It makes the market a destination.”

For you flea fanatics, yes, Rafael Soler will be back with his pupusas this weekend. You can also expect to see familiar vendors like Kumquat Cupcakery and McClure’s Pickles, and Fine+Raw Chocolate will debut a new raw hot cocoa that is sure to keep fingers warm while musing over new and vintage finds. Other new notables: Bardwell’s 140 year-old-Vermont cheeses will arrive this weekend along with Chris and his Kings County BBQ truck stationed out front.

More than 25 designers are set to appear, including silkscreeners Loyalty + Blood; handmade mavens Heartisans, Jewelers Bridhouse, Brooklyn Junior, and Georges. For our green thumbers, there will be greenery and garden design from Groundwork. Also, unique to this market, will be the debut of the “Curated Corner,” a partnership by the Flea, guest curators, and their favorite designers, shops, artists, and dealers. Mark your calendars with the known current lineup with more curators to be announced soon: Daily Candy (Feb 7-8), Refinery29 (Feb 21-22), Cool Hunting (March 7-8) and Fred Flare (date TBA).

81 Front “comes closer to creating a complete version of an outdoor flea market,” said Demby. This weekend is the soft launch of the market, so make sure to return for the full launch on Feb 7th to see what he means.
