Local legend has it that the decadent balboa bar was first served in Balboa Island. The foundation of this tasty treat is a rectangle-shaped chunk of vanilla ice cream dunked in chocolate and dipped in your choice of sprinkles, cookies, or other sugary delights.
Balboa bars are served at various locations on Balboa Island’s Marine Avenue, but the question has always been which business served the first one? Locals have narrowed the contenders down to two establishments: Dad’s Donut & Bakery Shop and Sugar ‘N Spice only a few stores apart from one another. Although there is evidence pointing to both sides of the argument, it seems this urban legend will remain a mystery.
