The end of one year and the start of a new one (2025) deserves a special celebration. What better way to mark the occasion than dining in a small, private restaurant that felt unique and intimate? At La Terrazza in Ybor City, it felt as though we were stepping into a relative’s kitchen—an inviting space to sit, talk, drink, and eat leisurely. This relaxed, no-rush atmosphere is quintessentially Italian, and it perfectly captured the essence of La Terrazza Restaurant in Tampa.

An Italian Cornerstone in Ybor City

Nestled in a historic section of Ybor City, La Terrazza Restaurant in Tampa is surrounded by a rich heritage of Italian businesses, restaurants, and clubs. The iconic Italian American Club, which has stood for decades, speaks to the area’s deep Italian roots. Historically a gathering spot for business officials, it’s no surprise that authentic Italian restaurants, like La Terrazza, thrive in this neighborhood.

La Terrazza specializes in true Northern Italian cuisine, a style distinct from the southern regions of Italy such as Naples or Rome. Italian food is known for its regional diversity, and La Terrazza faithfully represents the refined and nuanced flavors of Northern Italy. Dining here felt like embarking on a culinary journey to the northern regions without leaving Ybor City.

A Warm Welcome and a Toast to Begin

As we walked through the doors of La Terrazza in Ybor City, we were greeted warmly and promptly seated. The attentive staff made us feel right at home, and we were encouraged to explore their menu of authentic Italian wines. Being in an Italian restaurant, wine was the natural choice—a perfect accompaniment to the meal ahead. Whether red or white, the selections were imported directly from Italy and paired perfectly with the dishes. The extensive wine menu reflected the restaurant’s commitment to providing an authentic Italian dining experience.

A Variety of Tastes and Dishes to Start

Once the wine was poured, we turned our attention to the appetizers. In traditional Italian fashion, the meal began with small plates designed to tantalize the palate. Our waiter, with his expert knowledge and delightful Italian charm, guided us through the options. True to Italian tradition, the ladies placed their orders first, followed by the gentlemen.

We made a variety of selections, including:

  • Prosciutto e Formaggio: Thin slices of Parma prosciutto, paired with shaved Parmesan cheese, olives, tomatoes, and a light vinaigrette. This classic dish was a delightful balance of salty, tangy, and fresh flavors.

  • Insalata di Asparagi: A refreshing salad featuring asparagus, mozzarella, roasted red peppers, tomatoes, and artichokes, topped with virgin olive oil and lemon. This light dish would be just as enjoyable on a summer evening.

  • Salmon Affumicato: Smoked Nova Scotia salmon served with capers, onions, and lemon—a clean, refreshing dish that left us anticipating the courses to follow.

The Main Course: Northern Italian Excellence

When the entrees arrived, they were presented with care and precision. The generous portions and rich aromas were an indication of the thoughtful preparation behind each dish.

Among our selections were:

  • Spaghetti ai Frutti di Mare: A heavenly combination of handmade pasta and fresh seafood, including clams, mussels, scallops, and shrimp, all served in a delicate white wine, olive oil, and garlic sauce with chopped tomatoes. The al dente pasta paired perfectly with the sauce, which practically begged to be soaked up with a piece of bread.

  • Agnolotti di Aragosta e Garnachio: Lobster and crab-stuffed ravioli in a light Alfredo sauce with shrimp and asparagus. This luxurious dish tasted as though it had been made from scratch just moments before it arrived at our table.
  • Veal Scaloppine Piccata: Tender veal in a white wine butter sauce with capers and parsley, served with perfectly seasoned chef’s potatoes and fresh vegetables. The balance of flavors made this dish a standout.

The freshness of the ingredients was evident in every bite. Sharing plates among the group allowed us to sample a variety of flavors and textures, making the meal an interactive and delightful experience.

To End the Meal: Desserts and Espresso

After the main course, we couldn’t resist the allure of traditional Italian desserts. For dessert, we kept it classic:

  • Cannoli: Filled with a creamy, freshly made filling and encased in a crisp pastry shell. It was as comforting as a homemade treat.
  • Tiramisu: Layers of espresso-dipped ladyfingers and sweet mascarpone filling created a dessert that was rich, airy, and simply divine.

  • Cheesecake with Berries: A twist on the classic, this dense and creamy cheesecake was topped with a medley of fresh berries, berry sauce, and a dollop of whipped cream.
