Sacramento. It’s our state capital, the birthplace (or nearly) of the Gold Rush, a field trip mecca, and that’s about it, right? Wrong. Yes, Sacramento is all of those things, but it’s also a happening metropolis with a great arts scene, fun nightlife, and delicious eats. Here, some of the best activities to do in Sacramento.

1. Explore landmark buildings, old-fashioned photography studios, and sweet shops galore in Old Sacramento, the first historic district in the West.

2. Get your party on at local favorite Stoney Inn, home to great burgers, drink specials, country music and line dancing. (1320 Del Paso Boulevard).

3. Catch a show at the California Musical Theatre. California’s largest nonprofit musical theatre puts on incredible  entertainment, from the best of Broadway to  the Music Circus, an open-air performing arts tradition (1419 H Street).

ella4. Every town has its go-to for sweets and savories, and in Sacramento that spot is Freeport BakeryStop in for a quiche lunch, and then stay for a champagne cake. They’ve also got tarts, pastries, knishes, and more (2966 Freeport Boulevard).

5. Go Underground. The original city of Sacramento was battered repeatedly by floods and storms before the entire city was raised. Today, visitors can see the well-preserved historic town via the Old Sacramento Underground tour, which runs on weekends throughout the year and daily during the summer ($15 for an adult ticket).

6. It’s all in the family at Ella Dining Room and Bar, an airy space just a block from the Capitol, overlooking the mall. As in their other restaurants, The Kitchen and Selland’s Market Cafe, the Selland family promotes locally sourced foods on Ella’s menu of New American and French cooking (1131 K Street).
