Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, ice skating is a great way to have fun, exercise, and make memories with your loved ones.
But where should you go for the best ice skating experience in the US? You might think of the famous Rockefeller Center Ice Skating Rink in New York City, or other ice skating locations around NYC, but that’s not the only option. In fact, there are many more unexpected (and less crowded) places to enjoy this beloved pastime across the country.

Viator created a points-based index system that analyzed the total number of ice rinks and the number of ice rinks per 100,000 people in each state. The results are surprising, to say the least.

That’s more than twice the number of ice rinks in Hawaii, which has a similar-sized population.
One of the most popular ice rinks in Connecticut is the 4.5-star rated Winterfest Hartford, which offers free skating and skate rentals from November to January. You can also enjoy live music, food trucks, and fireworks at this festive venue. If you’re looking for a more intimate setting, you can check out the 4.7-star rated International Skating Center of Connecticut, which is home to several Olympic and world champions. You can take lessons, join a hockey league, or just have fun on the ice.

9. South Dakota
South Dakota may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of ice skating, but it’s actually a hidden gem for this sport. With 15 ice rinks and 1.65 ice rinks per 100,000 people, South Dakota ranks ninth in the list of best states for ice skating. That’s more than three times the number of ice rinks in Nevada, which has a similar-sized population.
One of the most unique ice rinks in South Dakota is the 4.8-star rated Main Street Square Ice Rink, which is located in the heart of downtown Rapid City. You can skate under the stars, surrounded by sculptures, fountains, and lights. You can also enjoy live entertainment, food vendors, and special events at this urban oasis. If you’re looking for a more natural setting, you can head to the 4.6-star rated Spearfish Rec and Aquatics Center, which offers an outdoor ice rink with stunning views of the Black Hills.
South Dakota is also a great destination for other winter activities, such as snowmobiling, ice fishing, and snowboarding. 8. Wisconsin

One of the most famous ice rinks in Wisconsin is the 4.6-star rated Red Arrow Park, which is located in downtown Milwaukee. You can skate on a 128-by-95-foot oval rink, surrounded by skyscrapers, trees, and sculptures. You can also warm up with a hot chocolate or a coffee at the Starbucks cafe next to the rink. If you’re looking for a more adventurous experience, you can try the 4.7-star rated Titletown Ice Rink, which is part of the Green Bay Packers’ entertainment district. You can skate on a 85-by-200-foot rink, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Camden Hills, and the Penobscot Bay. You can skate on a 110,000-square-foot rink, which can accommodate up to 800 skaters at a time. If you’re looking for a more scenic experience, you can check out the 4.8-star rated Lake of the Isles, which is a natural lake that freezes over in the winter. This is more than double the number of ice rinks available in Alaska (19), despite having a similar-sized population.
One of the most amazing ice rinks in North Dakota is the 5-star rated Ralph Engelstad Arena, which is the home of the University of North Dakota’s ice hockey team—the Fighting Hawks—one of the oldest and most successful Division I programs in the United States. You can skate on a 200-by-85-foot rink, surrounded by 11,000 seats, a video scoreboard, and a state-of-the-art sound system. You can also watch the hockey games, concerts, and shows that are hosted at this world-class venue. If you’re looking for a more quaint experience, you can check out the 4.9-star rated Town Square Ice Rink, which is located in the heart of downtown Grand Forks. You can skate on a 60-by-120-foot rink, surrounded by shops, restaurants, and art galleries.
