Paris, France\u2019s largest city and crown jewel, is gifted with countless cool neighborhoods and cultural treasures to explore. But why limit your visit to the capital when the surrounding countryside has so much to offer? Discover a chateau, an artistic walking path, or a world-renowned flea market using Paris\u2019s affordable, user-friendly public transportation system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paris by Rail<\/b><\/p>\n

Paris\u2019s underground subway, the M\u00e9tro, is the easiest way to get around the city and offers an extended network into neighboring towns called the RER (R\u00e9seau Express R\u00e9gional). The RER has several lines out of the city, designated by letter and direction. To gain access to the RER network (which also connects Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports), purchase an all-inclusive M\u00e9tro <\/span>ticket<\/span> for 1-5 days (ranging in price from 11<\/span>\u20ac<\/span>65 to 63<\/span>\u20ac<\/span>90), available at kiosks or the window at any M\u00e9tro station.<\/span><\/p>\n

For help using the M\u00e9tro and RER systems, the French transport authority, the RATP, has published a<\/span> guide<\/span> and created an<\/span> app<\/span> for tourists. For help planning a trip and travel times, use the RATP\u2019s <\/span>Journey Simulator<\/span>, available in English. Paris by Train also offers in-depth<\/span> instructions<\/span><\/a> to the RER. <\/span><\/p>\n

Lunch in the Shade of the Chateau<\/b><\/p>\n

\"Sceaux\u2019s<\/a><\/p>\n

Pack the perfect picnic to eat at the ornate gardens at <\/span>Sceaux<\/b>\u2019s<\/strong> Ch\u00e2teau. Created by the gardener to \u201cSun King\u201d Louis XIV, the grounds feature 180 acres of immaculate greenery, a museum, Orangerie, and sculpture garden. Come during the spring to sit beneath blossoming cherry trees. After a lazy afternoon, watch a play at nationally commended theatre<\/span> Les G\u00e9meaux<\/span><\/a>, which offers a program of classical and contemporary works. <\/span><\/p>\n

Get here: <\/b>Sceaux is served by two stations on the RER B: Sceaux and Robinson. To reach the gardens, take the RER B south towards Robinson and get off at Sceaux. Approximately 40 minutes from Ch\u00e2telet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step Into a Painting<\/b><\/p>\n

Stroll through the dreamy landscapes of the Impressionists on the <\/span>\u00cele des Impressionistes<\/b>. Artistic muse, the narrow paths and water views on the \u00cele (island) appear in numerous works by Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, and Sisley (amongst others). Spend a sunny day following one of<\/span> Balades en Yvelines<\/span>\u2019 Impressionist-themed <\/span>paths<\/span> (marked under \u201cCircuit des Impressionistes) to step into some of the masters\u2019 most famous paintings; finish up with a bottle of wine while watching the sun set over the canal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Get here: <\/b>Take the RER A towards Saint-Germain-en-Laye; exit at Gare de Reuil-Malmaison or Chatou-Croissy (slightly closer). The island is sandwiched between the two stops. Approximately 30 minutes from Ch\u00e2telet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Culture and Shopping in the Suburbs<\/b><\/p>\n

\"Seine-Saint-Denis\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Seine-Saint-Denis<\/b>, colloquially called \u201cQuatre-vingt-trois\u201d or \u201cNeuf-trois\u201d after the area\u2019s department code (93), is rapidly shedding its rough-around-the-edges reputation. Start early at the<\/span> March\u00e9 aux Puces de Saint-Ouen<\/span>, the best antique market in \u00cele-de-France. After a morning haggling with merchants, head towards the Parc de la L\u00e9gion d\u2019Honneur, host to the beautiful former royal abbey and an expansive greenspace humming with families during the warmer months. Don\u2019t miss the Basilique Cath\u00e9drale de Saint-Denis, featuring a spectacular rose window to rival that of the N\u00f4tre Dame.<\/span><\/p>\n

Get here:<\/b> Access Les Puces de Saint-Ouen by taking M\u00e9tro line #4 to Porte de Cligancourt (the last stop). To reach the Parc, take M\u00e9tro line #13 towards Saint-Denis Universit\u00e9 and get off at Saint-Denis-Porte de Paris. Alternatively, shortcut to the Basilique by continuing on line #13 to Basilique de Saint-Denis. Approximately 20 minutes to Porte de Cligancourt and 30 minutes to Saint-Denis-Porte de Paris from Ch\u00e2telet. <\/span><\/p>\n

Old-City Charm<\/b><\/p>\n

\"Pontoise<\/a><\/p>\n

Step back in time in <\/span>Pontoise<\/b>, located on the banks of the Oise River. Explore the architecture of the center city, particularly the Cath\u00e9drale Saint-Maclou de Pontoise, originally constructed in the 12<\/span>th<\/span> century. A map detailing buildings of interest is available on the Pontoise<\/span> website<\/span><\/a> (scroll to the bottom). When your feet start to ache, grab dinner at<\/span> L\u2019Arbre Blanc<\/span><\/a>, an intimate restaurant offering contemporary interpretations of meat dishes (such as whiskey-braised veal), or<\/span> L\u2019Audience<\/span>, serving a trim menu of French classics and a trio of cr\u00e8me brul\u00e9es for dessert.<\/span><\/p>\n

Get here: <\/b>Take the RER C towards Pontoise and exit at the end of the line. Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes from Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay.<\/span><\/p>\n
