Why:<\/strong> If you wore Girbaud jeans in the 1990’s then you’re probably a fan of rapper Grand Puba, and if you know Grand Puba, then you’re probably a fan of his work as part of New York-based rap trio Brand Nubian<\/strong>. Nubian joined in on the success of early 90’s Hip-Hop with songs like “Slow Down,” a cautionary tale to young girls about the perils of living fast.<\/p>\n

Those were the heady days of New York’s Native Tongues movement<\/a> when groups like De La Soul, Gangstarr, and A Tribe Called Quest were bending perceptions and still selling records. To put it in context of New York’s ever evolving music history, <\/em>Brand Nubian came just before The Wu-Tang Clan’s brash East Coast interpretation of street strife but right after the political underpinnings of Public Enemy.<\/p>\n

Now we have the iPhone’s Auto-Tune. Does that make you sad? A slice of nostalgia can be found this Saturday night at Hello Brooklyn, a new music and art event space in Red Hook. Brand Nubian headlines Meet Who You Tweet<\/strong> presented by local DJ Lil Shawn.<\/p>\n

About that title, if you’re wondering, the answer is “yes” Brand Nubian does tweet. Grand Puba not so much, but Lord Jamar likes to quote Letterman<\/a>.<\/p>\n
