{"id":6509,"date":"2009-08-31T09:27:49","date_gmt":"2009-08-31T13:27:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/ny\/?p=6509"},"modified":"2019-06-25T07:26:55","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T11:26:55","slug":"brooklyn-rock-climbing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/ny\/6509\/brooklyn-rock-climbing\/","title":{"rendered":"An Eco-Minded Rock Climbing Center Opens in Brooklyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>August 31, 2009 &#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWe basically built a playground for ourselves,\u201d said Ben Weaver, technical director and climbing manager at <strong>Brooklyn Boulders<\/strong>. \u201cAnd there\u2019s a real need in New York City for a dedicated climbing gym on the subway line in Brooklyn.\u201d Located in Carroll Gardens, the Brooklyn Boulders facility was the first of it&#8217;s kind in the tri-state area and started by a small group of climbing-obsessed college buddies determined to offer a different experience.<\/p>\n<p>Founders Stephen Spaeth, Jeremy Balboni, and Lance Pinn contributed their ideas and tapped into their imaginations to help create a climbing facility\u2014complete with a mountable Brooklyn Bridge-like tower\u2014that is truly eye-catching. The 18,000-square-foot venue boast 30-foot ceilings and a custom flooring system that is firm to walk across but soft to fall on. Much of the gym was constructed from recycled materials, and energy-efficient equipment, and the interior is decked out with graffiti-style artwork.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the intensity of Boulders\u2019 experienced rock climbing community\u2014many are part of an intense second generation of <a title=\"Gunks Article on offManhattan\" href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/ny\/2008\/05\/15\/rock-climbing-in-the-gunks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gunks<\/a> climbers\u2014amateurs are very welcome, and even catered to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re set up to be a comfortable home base for the climbers of New York\u2014like a clubhouse for climbers\u2014and we really want to make beginners and kids alike feel like a part of that club,\u201d Weaver explained. \u201cThere\u2019s really nothing like climbing. The rush and the focus of it are really unique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Brooklyn gym is open to climbers daily from 7AM to 12AM. Climbing classes, which focus on basic techniques and include rental gear,\u00a0run at 6PM and 8PM on weekdays and at 11AM and 1PM on weekends. A separate class called &#8220;Learn the Ropes&#8221; includes a day pass, equipment rental and a one-month membership for $78.
