And with places like <a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/world\/29196\/top-things-to-do-in-singapore\/\">Singapore<\/a>, Iceland and <a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/world\/28536\/peru-best-adventures-in-the-inca-heartland\/\">Peru<\/a> getting so much attention as of late, it\u2019s easy to overlook what\u2019s going on right here in our backyard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From downtown farmer&#8217;s markets to some of the best food cities in the country, the eastern seaboard has a lot to offer. But the other <a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/ny\/61484\/the-best-restaurants-in-portland-maine\/\">Portland<\/a> \u2014 the one known for lobster rolls and lighthouses \u2014 is starting to create quite the buzz as a noteworthy foodie destination. If you are a beer lover, be sure to sample the Belgian selection at <a href=\"https:\/\/novareresbiercafe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Novare Res<\/a> before heading to Foundation, Liquid Riot or one of the other many breweries around the city. With help from <a href=\"https:\/\/themainebrewbus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Maine Brew Bus<\/a>, car-free drinking in Portland has never been easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before you fill up on your share of micro-brews, make sure to save some room for some of the country\u2019s best food. <a href=\"https:\/\/duckfat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duckfat<\/a> is a locally-owned restaurant known for their Belgian-style potatoes fried in duck fat and served in a paper cone. Or if Vietnamese is your thing, swing by <a href=\"http:\/\/congtubot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cong Tu Bot<\/a> for some Pho and a cup of traditional Vietnamese coffee. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandemcoffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tandem Coffee Roasters<\/a>, which finds its home in an old gas station, offers some of the best baked goods in the city. A culinary tour, such as the Maine Foodie Tours, can also be a good way to explore <a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/ny\/57049\/portland-maine-food\/\">Portland\u2019s culinary scene<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, food and beer isn\u2019t the only reason to visit Portland. While it does get crowded during the summer months, the Portland Head Light is an iconic lighthouse that should be on any first-timer\u2019s Portland list. Wander the cobblestone streets of Old Port, stopping in the local boutiques and shops, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statetheatreportland.com\/calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">catch a show<\/a> at the State Theater. And there is no better time than 2020 for it to make your radar. Go beyond the Inner Harbor to explore the best of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/ny\/57262\/baltimore-best-new-eats-and-drinks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 200 eclectic neighborhoods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are filled with history, events, food, culture and a lively nightlife. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recently opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessbrewerybaltimore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guinness Open Gate Brewery and Barrel House<\/a> offers public tours, taproom tastings and fine dining in a 270-seat restaurant, and is the first Guinness Brewery in the United States. While it\u2019s not within walking distance of downtown, it can be reached with a short Uber drive out of the city. Beer lovers should also know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitmaryland.org\/article\/febrewary-maryland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FeBREWary<\/a> \u2014 a month-long celebration of craft beer and events \u2014 is a great time to visit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, Hammerjacks \u2014 a music venue that was made popular in the 80\u2019s thanks to acts such as The Ramones and Joan Jett \u2014 will be reopening with an added beer garden and a smaller space that can hold small shows. The famed Rhode Island School of Design, better known as RISD, is one of the top educational institutions for art and design in the world and a hotbed of creativity. Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/risdmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RISD Museum<\/a> and experience the acclaimed exhibits and stellar public programming. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No visit is complete without a stroll around Federal Hill, the city\u2019s Italian-American enclave. Bring your appetite and dine at one of the many restaurants clustered here. Whether you choose Italian, Thai or Japanese cuisine, top your meal off with a pastry or biscotti at <a href=\"https:\/\/scialobakery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scialo Bros. Bakery<\/a>. The small city of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discoverlancaster.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lancaster<\/a> is perfect for a weekend getaway from New York City due to its accessibility via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourbus.com\/routes\/nyc-to-lancaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OurBus<\/a>, streets lined with hip cafes and vintage boutiques, and an evolving culinary scene. New openings are popping up around the city constantly, such as the newly-opened <a href=\"https:\/\/amorette.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amorette<\/a> which offers French-American fare in a fine-dining setting. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shotandbottle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shot and Bottle<\/a> is another new establishment in Penn Square, and is a top spot for Pennsylvania Spirits and Craft Brews. If you\u2019re on the search for a classic cocktail, be sure to stop by <a href=\"https:\/\/horseinnlancaster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Horse Inn<\/a>, which was once an actual speakeasy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/centralmarketlancaster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Central Market<\/a> is the longest continuously running farmers market in the country, and is the perfect way to experience the culture and local atmosphere of Lancaster County. The first and second blocks of North Prince Street (known as Gallery Row) is another one of the city\u2019s bucket list stops, and is home to the Freiman Stoltzfus gallery as well as others. Ride Amtrak\u2019s Downeaster from Boston\u2019s North Station and get set to discover a series of gorgeous towns awash with lighthouses and scenery you won\u2019t soon forget. Visit shopping mecca <a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/ny\/49638\/things-to-do-in-freeport-maine\/\">Freeport<\/a> or stately Brunswick, where Bowdoin College is located. Learn about Maine\u2019s seafaring history at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainemaritimemuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine Maritime Museum<\/a> in Bath, which features its own working shipyard. Don\u2019t miss a visit to Popham Beach near Phippsburg. &nbsp;It\u2019s a long stretch of soft sand with sublime scenery, including several offshore islands. Beachgoers may walk to Fox Island at low tide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, no visit to Maine is complete without indulging in a succulent lobster roll. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redseatsmaine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Red\u2019s Eats<\/a> in Wiscasset makes one of the best in Maine. This humble seasonal shack has been serving hungry patrons for 80 years.
