Russell Banks. One giant outdoor bookstore. Mary Gaitskill. Sitting beside fellow literary aficionados on concrete steps culling inspiration from writers in conversation. Paul Auster.<\/p>\n<p>On the 5<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Brooklyn Book Festival, programming expands to include the bookend feature\u2014an additional roster of cross-cultural literary events. \u201cPeople wanted more. On Sunday, the festival\u2019s full day of free activities occurs in the hub of downtown Brooklyn and will including another festival first\u2014picnicking in the park. A host of sponsors including the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, St. Francis College as well as the Brooklyn Historical Society have opened up halls and green spaces, so that \u201cthe Book Festival includes the best of Brooklyn and the best of the rest,\u201d says Brooklyn Borough President and festival founder, Marty Markowitz.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Book It to These Events<\/strong><br \/>\nA few Brooklyn and green themed activities of note include: Brooklyn\u2019s new poet laureate Tina Chang moderating her favorite poets as they read from their work in <strong>Brooklyn Poet Laureate Presents<\/strong> at 10a.m.; the <strong>Brooklyn Remix Lit Match Awards<\/strong> unite students of the <em>Brooklyn Remix<\/em> borough-wide writing contest, and <strong>Troupe Classics performs classic children\u2019s books<\/strong> in the Target Children&#8217;s Area; 11 a.m. BAM\u2019s <strong>Kafka on the Block <\/strong>in conjunction with BAM\u2019s Next Wave Festival performance of\u00a0<em>Metamorphosis<\/em> hosting a panel discussion on Kafka\u2019s legacy;<strong> <\/strong>at noon<strong> <\/strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span>One Story<\/em> presents readings by three Brooklyn authors published in the magazine including Reif Larsen (<em>The Selected Works of T.S. At 3p.m. local humorist John Hodgman and others discuss their works in <strong>Finding the <\/strong><strong>Funny: The Humor of the Everyday <\/strong>followed by a discussion of the value of<strong> <\/strong>sustainable environmental practices in <strong>It Ain\u2019t Easy Being Green <\/strong><strong> <\/strong>with <strong>Beavan<\/strong> (<em>No Impact Man<\/em>), <strong>Heather Rogers<\/strong> (<em>Green Gone Wrong<\/em>), <strong>Anna Lapp\u00e9 <\/strong>(<em>Diet for a Hot Planet<\/em>), and <strong>Miyun Park<\/strong> (<em>Gristle<\/em>). At the closing hour of the festival you can hear the dramatic readings in <strong>The Play\u2019s The Thing <\/strong>with Jake Ehrenreich\u2019s <em>A Jew Grows in Brooklyn<\/em>, a musical and memoir about the reflections of\u00a0a first generation American growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>Since ticketed events fill up fast, first time attendees and repeat festival goers are encouraged to plan their day using the \u201c2010\u201d events guide for a full list of stages, panels and times at the even website below.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost:<\/strong> Free, although some events are ticketed. Tickets can be claimed at festival booths one hour in advance of the program.
