From Native American Lamchin inhabitants to Spanish invaders and those foolhardy &#8220;panners&#8221; during the California Gold Rush, this small city has played host to a whole series of characters. Now, it&#8217;s still about embracing opposites\u2014with a bustling downtown area, several museums, and a homey, small-town feel.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>By Caltrain<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/1389\/caltrain-information-guide\/\"> Caltrain<\/a> picks up in China Basin or Dogpatch in the city and speeds down the peninsula to San Carlos. It is also possible to take BART to Millbrae and transfer to Caltrain (although this is a slightly longer journey).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stop: <\/strong>San Carlos Station<br \/>\n<strong>Duration:<\/strong>\u00a037 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>Cost:<\/strong>\u00a0$4.75<br \/>\n<strong>Departures:<\/strong>\u00a04:55 a.m. &#8211; \u00a012:01 a.m. weekdays; 8:15 a.m &#8211; 9:15 p.m. weekends<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>By SamTrans<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nSamTrans connects various destinations along the peninsula.
