Well, it does exist, and the locals call it “Newps.” In Newport Beach, people ride bikes down the boardwalks (with surfboards in hand), and you can hear the waves breaking in the night from nearly anywhere in town. And there is no need for a white Christmas when you have \u00a0lights and decorations on all the boats in the bay. A little California magic. That’s Newps for you.<\/p>\n

Here’s a local’s guide to a weekend getaway in seaside Newport Beach.<\/p>\n

Things to Do<\/strong>
\n1. Try out your sea legs. Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard at Marina Boat Rentals<\/a><\/strong> to experience the gorgeous Newport Beach Harbor (newportbeachboatrentals.com<\/a>). Don’t feel like breaking a sweat? Take the Balboa Ferry across the harbor to Balboa Island. When the surf is big, it’s a great place to watch boogie-boarders and body surfers carve the waves. If you’re after your own time on a board, rent one at a shop on the boardwalk and head to Blackies surf beach by the Newport Pier.<\/p>\n

4. Catch a\u00a0matin\u00e9e film at the majestic and historic Lido Theatre<\/a><\/strong> across the street (3459\u00a0Via\u00a0Lido,\u00a0regencymovies.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Where to Eat<\/strong>
\n1. Head to Great Mex<\/a><\/strong>, a coveted spot (just don’t tell them I sent you\u2014it’s\u00a0sacred to locals!) for delicious Mexican grub. (703 East Balboa Boulevard, greatmexgrill.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n

2. Avanti Cafe<\/a><\/strong> sits just outside the Newport Beach city line, but it’s worth going the extra mile. All vegetarian and vegan-friendly, this friendly spot serves up tasty eats with a feel-good spin\u00a0(259 E. 17th Street, Costa Mesa, avantinatural.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n

3. Go local at the Sunday Farmer’s Market at Lido Marina Village, open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (newportbeachfm.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\nYou can fly into John Wayne Airport which is easily accessible to Newport Beach by bus (the bus 76 connects to various lines that reach Newport proper).<\/p>\n
