Most visitors head directly to the beach, but it\u2019s worth spending at least a day in downtown San Diego. While it\u2019s not the easiest city to explore car-free (it\u2019s hillier than you might expect!),\u00a0it is doable. Head to a trolley station and pick up a <a title=\"permanent link to sdmts webstie\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sdmts.com\/fares.asp#daypass\" target=\"_blank\">$5 daypass<\/a>, which gets you unlimited use on the reliable trolley system, as well as the somewhat less timely buses. The public transit system will take you to Little Italy, to the baseball stadium for a Padres game, and even over to the renowned San Diego Zoo, all without getting in a car.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5757 alignright lazyload\" title=\"Littly Italy Mercato\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/5647821688_15c2671b06_z.jpeg\" alt=\"Littly Italy Mercato\" width=\"310\" height=\"212\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5757 alignright lazyload\" title=\"Littly Italy Mercato\" src=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/5647821688_15c2671b06_z.jpeg\" alt=\"Littly Italy Mercato\" width=\"310\" height=\"212\" \/><\/noscript>2. The <a title=\"little italy mercato website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.littleitalysd.com\/mercato\/\" target=\"_blank\">Little Italy Mercato<\/a> on Saturday mornings is, for starters, a great farmers\u2019 market (two-for-$1 avocados!) but also a spot to peruse gourmet foodstuffs, take in live music, and sample just-caught sea urchin, cut open and served while still alive.<\/p>\n<p>3. Beer nerds won\u2019t want to miss the area\u2019s many breweries, but most are set far from the downtown area. <a title=\"brewery tours website\" href=\"http:\/\/brewerytoursofsandiego.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brewery Tours of San Diego<\/a> will pick you up at downtown hotels and take you on a full-day beer-hop, visiting Stone Brewing Company, Ballast Point, and other SD craft brewers, all without having to get behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to Eat: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5756 alignleft lazyload\" title=\"Pacos from R Gang Eatery\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/7529768120_32fbe6d9e2.jpeg\" alt=\"Pacos from R Gang Eatery\" width=\"250\" height=\"200\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5756 alignleft lazyload\" title=\"Pacos from R Gang Eatery\" src=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/7529768120_32fbe6d9e2.jpeg\" alt=\"Pacos from R Gang Eatery\" width=\"250\" height=\"200\" \/><\/noscript>1. <a href=\"http:\/\/carnitassnackshack.com\/\">Carnitas Snack Shack<\/a> in the hipster-fied North Park neighborhood is home to San Diego\u2019s hot taco of the moment: a Mexican-meets-southern-BBQ mash-up that layers slow-cooked local pulled pork on fresh, homemade tortillas.<\/p>\n<p>2. <a title=\"peranent link to R Gang Eatery\" href=\"http:\/\/rgangeatery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">R Gang Eatery<\/a> in the Hillcrest \u201cgayborhood\u201d serves up some of the most playful hangover-soaking food we\u2019ve ever seen, including <em>pacos<\/em> (buttermilk pancake \u201ctacos\u201d stuffed with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese, sour cream and pico de gallo).<\/p>\n<p>3. Be sure not to leave without sampling the iconic San Diego foodstuff\u2014a California burrito (carne asada, French fries, salsa, cheese and guacamole). Available all over the place, but the open-24-hours <a href=\"http:\/\/saguarosmexicanfood.com\/\">Saguaro\u2019s<\/a> is one of the best bets.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5755 alignright lazyload\" title=\"La Pensione Hotel\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/7529479402_77432235dc_z.jpeg\" alt=\"La Pensione Hotel\" width=\"306\" height=\"202\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5755 alignright lazyload\" title=\"La Pensione Hotel\" src=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/7529479402_77432235dc_z.jpeg\" alt=\"La Pensione Hotel\" width=\"306\" height=\"202\" \/><\/noscript>Where to Sleep:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"la pensione hotel website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lapensionehotel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">La Pensione Hotel<\/a> (from $109) is an arty boutique property in the heart of the trendy Little Italy neighborhood, and adjacent to the city\u2019s main Amtrak station. From here, you can easily hop on the trolley to explore most of downtown San Diego, car-free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting There:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>The trip from Santa Barbara to San Diego is 5.5 hours on <a title=\"amtrak pacific coastliner\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/servlet\/ContentServer?c=AM_Route_C&amp;pagename=am%2FLayout&amp;cid=1241245649505\" target=\"_blank\">Amtrak\u2019s Pacific Surfliner<\/a> (from $41, or $68 total for a direct ticket from San Francisco).
