There are, of course, San Francisco&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twin_Peaks_(San_Francisco,_California)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twin Peaks<\/a>, which rise to 922 feet to the west of downtown (and the 850-foot Transamerica building).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Saint_Helena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mt. Saint Helena<\/a>, the tallest mount in the nine counties,\u00a0towers over Sonoma and Marin in all of its 4,342-feet glory. And the peak with the name that is the most fun to say is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Umunhum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mt. Umunhum<\/a>\u00a0(go ahead, try it!).<\/p>\n<p>The possibilities for enjoying all these &#8220;pies in the sky&#8221; are endless, from just taking in views of them to taking to their trails. Hiking, running, or meandering along their creeks and gullies can easily fill a peaceful afternoon, and pedaling up and down their hills offers an intense\u00a0adrenaline rush.<\/p>\n<p>But exploring the mountains of the Bay Area involves a car, doesn\u2019t it? (At least get to the trailhead, right?) Not necessarily. Hamilton\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>| Mt. Hamilton Road, San Jose\u00a0| South Bay<br \/>\nSneaky <a href=\"http:\/\/mthamilton.ucolick.org\/hamcam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mt. Hamilton<\/a> hides from view up in the Diablo mountain range. It&#8217;s the highest peak overlooking the Silicon Valley and home to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucolick.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lick Observatory<\/a>, the world&#8217;s first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory\u00a0(which offers excellent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucolick.org\/public\/sumvispro.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">star-gazing programs<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The 18-mile\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/transitandtrails.org\/trips\/27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bike ride to Mt. Hamilton&#8217;s summit<\/a>\u00a0from the San Jose Caltrain station involves a two-step climb. The first climbs up from the flatlands to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sccgov.org\/sites\/parks\/Ride%20Here\/Pages\/Joseph-D--Grant-County-Park.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joseph Grant County Park<\/a>\u00a0(known to locals as\u00a0Grant Ranch), a vast expanse of grasslands, wildflower, and 52 miles of trails for biking and hiking. From Grant Ranch, it&#8217;s a second climb to the top of Mt. Hamilton where the observatory is located.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mt. Hamilton is maintained by Santa Clara County Parks, which offers a plethora of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sccgov.org\/sites\/parks\/Documents\/SCCP_PHBKLTSPR12_PlayHere_SpringSummer2012.pdf \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">programs<\/a>\u00a0for all ages and abilities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions: <\/strong>Take <a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/1389\/caltrain-information-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caltrain<\/a> to San Jose and ride from there. For those wanting to visit without a bike, carpooling is the best bet (try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zimride.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zimride<\/a>\u00a0to find folks going your way).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/3126\/review-mount-tamalpais\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mt. Tamalpais<\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0<\/strong>Panoramic Highway Mill Valley\u00a0|\u00a0North Bay<br \/>\nFrom anywhere north of Oakland to anywhere south of Novato, one can catch a glimpse of this beloved Bay Area fixture, but the views from the mountain are as stellar (if not mores so) than views of it. <a href=\"http:\/\/transitandtrails.org\/trips\/29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biking to the top of Mt. Tam<\/a> is easy to do from anywhere in the Bay Area, thanks to the Golden Gate Bridge and the ferries to Sausalito (and we mean easy logistically\u2014not so easy on the muscles).<\/p>\n<p>There are also many ways to hike Tam, including the famed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dipsea.org\/course.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dipsea Trail<\/a>, or you can explore the mountain from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/transitandtrails.org\/trailheads\/86\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rock Spring trail<\/a>\u00a0on the west or head north and get to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/transitandtrails.org\/plan\/trailhead\/88\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lake Lagunitas<\/a>.\u00a0Along the way up or down, you might take a peek in the\u00a0exclusive\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.touristclubsf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tourist Club<\/a>\u00a0(open to the public on select weekends), or stop for the night (or a work party or Sunday pancake breakfast) at the historic\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.westpointinn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West Point Inn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mt. Tam is managed by both Marin Municipal Water District and California State Parks. While it isn\u2019t one of <a href=\"http:\/\/thefirst70.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The First 70<\/a>, it is certainly being impacted by the park closures.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions: <\/strong>There are several ways to reach Mt. Tam.\u00a0Take <a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/2331\/golden-gate-information-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Golden Gate Transit<\/a> Bus 92 toward Manzanita, then transfer in Marin City (at Donahue and Terners) to Marin Transit bus 61 toward Brighton Avenue and get off at Panoramic Highway and Pan Toll Road. (Visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marintransit.org\/\">marintransit.org<\/a>\u00a0for scheduling.) You can also take the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marintransit.org\/stage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marin Stage Coach<\/a> from many convenient places on the east side of Marin to more western and northern trails.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/bart.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" title=\"bart\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/bart-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"210\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" title=\"bart\" src=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/bart-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"210\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/strong>Mt. Diablo\u00a0<strong>| <\/strong><\/strong>96 Mitchell Canyon Road\u00a0|\u00a0East Bay<br \/>\nAs the Pittsburg\/Bay Point BART train nears Walnut Creek, majestic Mt. Diablo comes into view. It&#8217;s not the tallest of mountains, but one of the most expansive views in the world can be witnessed from its summit.<\/p>\n<p>There are several transit-friendly ways of getting closer to the Mt. Diablo&#8217;s peak. One is to <a href=\"http:\/\/transitandtrails.org\/trips\/28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bike the Iron Horse Trail<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0Pleasant Hill BART. (Note, however, that while it may be just 16.4 miles, 3,849 feet is a hefty climb.)<\/p>\n<p>The Donner Creek Trail makes a wonderful adventure in winter or spring, when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/transitandtrails.org\/trailheads\/530\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donner Canyon Falls<\/a>\u00a0gush down the mountainside.\u00a0From Concord BART, take the 10 County Connection bus to where Marsh crosses Bigelow Street. Walk an easy 20 minutes to the end of the road, where you&#8217;ll find Donner Creek Trail which runs parallel to Donner Creek. The views of the north side of the mountain are stunning, the shade along the creek refreshing, and the waterfalls awesome to watch.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mt Diablo sits in the middle of a huge state park and is surrounded by smaller open spaces managed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebparks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">East Bay Regional Park District<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walnut-creek.org\/citygov\/depts\/ps\/parks\/default.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City of Walnut Creek<\/a>, and other organizations. Working in partnership with these land managers is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savemountdiablo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Save Mount Diablo<\/a>, a long-standing and leading nonprofit organization.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions:\u00a0<\/strong>Take\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/577\/bart-information-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BART<\/a>\u00a0to Concord and catch the County Connection 10 bus to Clayton Road &amp; Mitchell Canyon Road (the journey takes about an hour and a half). Or take BART to Walnut Creek or Pleasant Hill and bike from there (about a 2.5-hour ride).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pulling it all together<\/strong><br \/>\nWant to see them all? There is a way to experience Mt. Hamilton, Mt. Tam, and Mt. Diablo in one magical (and action-packed) day. On <strong>June 16, 2012<\/strong>, a group of cyclists will attempt to ride up all three of these peaks\u2014using public transit to reach the base of each. It\u2019s called the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/altride.transitandtrails.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alt. ride<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0and it\u2019s 128 miles of riding, 12,000 feet of elevation gain, and 100% Bay Area. Nowhere else can you use three kinds of transit (<a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/1389\/caltrain-information-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caltrain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/691\/golden-gate-ferry-san-francisco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Golden Gate Ferry<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/577\/bart-information-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BART<\/a>)\u00a0to summit three mountains of this size. Riders will go through six parks and take in the views of numerous other peaks along the way.<\/p>\n<p>You can join us on June 16 in ways big or small, at high or low elevations.
