Description<\/strong>
\nRenowned horticulturalist Luther Burbank was a pioneer in the practice of botanical hybridization, introducing more than 800 varieties of plants. We have Burbank to thank for such rooted wonders as the spineless cactus, the Shasta daisy, and the Russet Burbank potato (now commonly used to make French fries).<\/p>\n

Today, the modified Greek Revival home where Burbank resided for most of his career (from 1884 until 1906) is a tranquil historic landmark where visitors can explore the home with original furnishings, the greenhouse where Burbank innovate, and the carriage house, which has been converted to a museum and gift shop.<\/p>\n

Of course the highlight of a visit to the Bubank home is a relaxing stroll through its 1.6 acres of tranquil gardens, many planted with Burbank’s creations.<\/p>\n

Guided tours of the house and greenhouse cost $7 (children 12 and under are free), but it is free to explore the gardens\u2014and there is a free \u00a0audio tour available for guests with a smartphone.<\/p>\n

The gardens are open daily from 8 a.m. until dusk and drop-in tours are offered from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday between the months of April and October.<\/p>\n
