It functions as a parish church, museum, school, and\u2014most importantly\u2014a terra cotta monument ready and waiting for you and your camera.<\/p>\n<p>Originally founded in 1771 by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jun%C3%ADpero_Serra\">Father Jun\u00edpero Serra<\/a>, father of the California missions, Mission Carmel served as headquarters of the California mission chain until 1803.\u00a0It was destroyed by an earthquake in the \u00a0mid-1800s and then restored in the early 20th century, and Father Serra himself is interred here, along with several other mission pioneers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/carmel-mission-bells.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4691 alignleft lazyload\" title=\"carmel mission bells\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/carmel-mission-bells-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"139\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4691 alignleft lazyload\" title=\"carmel mission bells\" src=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/carmel-mission-bells-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/carmel-mission-bells-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/offmetro.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/carmel-mission-bells-37x25.jpg 37w, https:\/\/offmetro.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/carmel-mission-bells.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/noscript><\/a>Set in lush and lovely Carmel, among tranquil courtyards and gardens of olive trees, bougainvillea and Mexican sage, the Moorish-style structure is nothing short of stunning, from its sandstone walls to its arched ceilings. Of particular note are the facade&#8217;s star-shaped window, the Moorish dome and the various original artifacts in the church and surrounding small museums. The quadrangle also boasts a large wooden cross recreated on the site where fragment&#8217;s of the original cross erected by Father Serra were discovered.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to religious ceremonies, the mission also hosts concerts,lectures, and contemporary art exhibits.<\/p>\n<p>The mission is open from 9:30 a.m until 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission fees\u00a0to visit the Mission grounds, Basilica and Museums cost $6.50 (adults), $4 (seniors), and $2 (kids ages 7 and up).<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/3534\/top-10-places-picture-bay-area\/\">best places to take a photo in the Bay Area<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nTake\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/offmetro.com\/sf\/1389\/caltrain-information-guide\/\">Caltrain<\/a>\u00a0south to the San Jose Diridon Station. Then hop on an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/servlet\/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak\/HomePage\">Amtrak<\/a> bus down to Carmel, transferring buses at Salinas.
