Berkeley’s expansive Tilden Park is made up of 2,079 beautiful acres of open space, marked by hills, lakes, and endless hiking trails that feel far removed from the hectic city.
Getaway within a city
Lush Tilden is a true escape from the hustle and bustle of both Berkeley and San Francisco. Take a swim in Lake Anza, play a round of golf, or wander through the unique biodiversity (replete with beekeeping area) of the Berkeley Botanical Gardens. There are also steam trains, a petting zoo, pony rides and a carousel.
The famous Lawrence Hall of Science, which is located just down the hill from the designated park area, boasts incredible views of the San Francisco Bay, along with fascinating exhibits like the interactive Science on a Sphere and a seismograph that tracks earthquakes happening around the world.
Have a field day
Tilden’s offers boundless hikes all levels and styles. Before hitting the trails, stock up on snacks at Star Grocery store (in the Elmwood/Claremont area) or the Ashby Market. Then head up to Inspiration Point and enjoy lunch with a view.
Take BART to Rockridge and then catch AC Transit Bur #67 in to the Canyon Drive. Or take BART to Downtown Berkeley. from there, you can either take the AC Transit Bus #67 to Grizzly Peak Boulevard, or rent a bike from the BART bike station and hit the park on two wheels.
