Description
Set at the meeting place of the Sacramento and American Rivers, Old Town Sacramento is a living monument to the Old West, with no shortage of charm.

Founded in 1849, this 28-acre section of town feels frozen in time, with 53 historic buildings and plenty of old-time fun— from the California State Railroad Museum (125 I Street) to old-fashioned photography studios like McGees Old Time Photos (103 K Street) to plenty of candy shops (this local’s favorite is Candy Heaven, 1201 Front Street) that serve up salt water taffy, novelty treats, and a healthy dose of, um, sweet vibrations.

But the most exciting aspect of Old Sac is new (sort of). The “original” Sacramento has been hidden since the mid-19th century, when the city was raised to protect it from the flood-prone rivers. Today, Underground Sacramento is a treasure trove of well-preserved history that can be seen on tours.
