Not only does Mike’s know bikes, but Mike’s knows Bay Area biking. Founded in 1964 in Marin County, Mike’s Bikes is a Bay Area mainstay, now with stores in San Rafael, Sausalito, San Francisco, Berkeley, Palo Alto, Sacramento, Los Gatos, Petaluma, and Walnut Creek. It’s even rumored that the San Rafael store sold some of the nation’s first mountain bikes.

The folks here know their bikes, and they not only sell bikes, bike gear, and cycling clothing, but the also do repairs, offer a free Wednesday night maintenance clinics, and sponsor the Team Mike’s Bikes cycling group.

Bike rentals are available at the Petaluma and Sacramento Mike’s Bikes locations, $40 for 24 hours. Bikes are rented only on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mike’s Bikes also operates Africa Projects, helping to create and sustain bike shops in developing African countries.

Find more bike rental shops in the Bay Area.

Locations vary. Take Amtrak to the rental locations in Petaluma or Sacramento.
