Description
Just north of Golden Gate Park sits the incredible Mount Tamalpais State Park, home to redwood forests, oak woodlands, 50 miles of trails, and a 2,571 peak. Climb to the top on your own two feet, or kick it up a notch on wheels. The twisting road to the summit might not scare Lance Armstrong, but be prepared for a rather challenging ride.

Whichever way you reach the summit, the reward is worth the effort. Soak up a little rarified sunshine, and enjoy stunning views of San Francisco, the glittering bay, and a beautiful landscape blanketed by redwoods.

Fun (and random) fact: Mt. Tam offers free Wi-Fi, available 150 to 200 feet away from the Ranger Station. That being said, we can’t imagine why one would want Wi-Fi in this incredible paradise. Instead, we recommend carting a picnic and enjoying it off the grid.

Directions
Take Golden Gate Transit Bus 92 toward Manzanita. Get off in Marin City at Donahue and Terners and transfer to Marin Transit Bus 61 toward Brighton Avenue. Get off at Panoramic Highway and Pan Toll Road. (Visit marintransit.org for scheduling.)

Biking to the top of Mt. Tam is easy to do from anywhere in the Bay Area, thanks to the Golden Gate Bridge and the ferries to Sausalito (and we mean easy logistically—not so easy on the muscles).
