Review: Hawker Fare in Oakland

2300 Webster Street
Oakland, CA 94612
(510) 832-8896

From the celebrated chef (and Oakland native) James Syhabout, who earned a Michelin Star for his acclaimed Piedmont restaurant Commis, comes the cool, casual, and super-downtown (and affordable) Oakland eatery Hawker Fare. Like Commis, the hip, graffiti-lined spot keeps the focus on local California ingredients.

The menu, inspired by southeast Asian street food, consists of rice bowls and small plates that don’t break $10. The 24hr pork belly (Berkshire pork with five spices, sweet soy and preserved vegetable mustard for just $9.50) is our favorite of the rice bowls, and should certainly be followed by the affogato soft serve (condensed milk ice cream spiked with a shot of hot Thai coffee, $5).
